Colo-X Analysis

Colo-X Analysis: Global Switch aim to sell large scale space on a leasehold basis to large corporate customers.  Colocation space, on a per rack or caged basis, is often available via the main tenants on a standard contractual arrangement.  Global Switch 1 probably has some 20 or so large scale clients in it, such as Global Crossing, BT or hosting providers like BIS or Adapt.

This facility is in a connectivity-rich environment, being almost next door to Telehouse, but given its age power per square metre is quite light by today’s standards.

Facility Description

Quite an interesting history to this site.   It was formerly the printing works for the Financial Times. It was acquired by developers in the late 90’s whose original idea was to make it into a multiplex cinema. However they were then persuaded that, with Telehouse sold out and the telecom boom just getting going, a data centre might be a good idea!   At the same time, Global Crossing had landed AC1 in Cornwall and were rapidly digging up the A303 to bring the new subsea system into London and were looking for somewhere to terminate it.  As a result, Global Crossing became the first tenant in the new facility, taking an initial one third or 60,000 sq ft of space and Global Switch was born.

This site is generally sold in large chunks, typically as a lease, to large clients including carriers such as BT, Global Crossing or managed service providers.  Saying this, Global Switch have, on occasion, sold colo (i.e. racks and cages) usually where they have some fitted out space handed back to them.

Today the site is largely sold out but colo can be found via the various tenants.  Connectivity options are good but power relatively light on a per rack or square metre basis, typically at 10Amps per cabinet.  Quality though is good.
